EXCITING NEWS!!!

No, no baby...simmer down there peeps! (isn't that what most people assume?)

Rocketgirl, that's me...is now a proud nominated and ELECTED member of the Board of Directors for the Shanti Uganda Society! I am PUMPED!

I will give you a brief run-down of the Shanti Uganda Society and you can also click the link to see their website & work, they also have a Facebook page for all you social networkers....

Shanti Uganda is a non-profit, charitable organization started here in Vancouver by a friend named Natalie.  Shanti is a Sanskrit word meaning peace, rest, calm...Shanti Uganda aims to improve the physical, emotional & spiritual well being of communities impacted by poverty, HIV/AIDS and war in Uganda.

Last year, Shanti officially received charity status here in Canada and has already done some amazing things in the district of Luwego, near Kampala in Uganda.  The highlights of Shanti so far, at least to me, are the Income Generating groups that Natalie started.  She trained the women to make handmade beaded jewelry, (see my lovely list post from two days ago to view...), trained them to make bags of all kinds on donated (awesome vintage!) sewing machines...the society then purchases these items from the women and brings them back to Canada to sell, and these women, most of them who are widowed, HIV positive and have no means of supporting their many children, are now enjoying food, "luxuries", medical care, ample savings accounts and the knowing that they can now support their families.

This past winter and spring saw the building of the Shanti Uganda birth house, a place where women can safely birth their babies.  The donations that flooded in, and the volunteers that constructed the birthing house...amazing.  A place where finally women don't have to travel miles and miles on a bicycle to deliver.  There is finally clean, running water, medical supplies at arms length, and Shanti Uganda is training local midwives to safely & naturally aid in the prenatal & postpartum care of women & babes, reducing infant mortality rates & all while keeping with traditional Ugandan therapies and practices.

Why Uganda you ask? Why not!  There's plenty of Rocketgirl love to go around.  Watch out Abbotsford & watch out Uganda! I have my first board meeting this coming week! Shreeeeeeek! My position is that of Treasurer.  I have lots to learn!  I do have more news...no, it's still not a baby...but I will keep you all posted...all in due time! ;)

Friday Pretties

 Our Chapel...

“Love is patient; love is kind and envies no one.
Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude;
never selfish, not quick to take offense.
There is nothing love cannot face;
there is no limit to its faith,
its hope, and endurance.
In a word, there are three things that last forever:
faith, hope, and love;
but the greatest of them all is love.”

Happy Friday Pretties!

~ Dandelion ~

While many people think of the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) as a pesky weed, herbalists consider it a valuable herb with many culinary and medicinal uses. Dandelion is a rich source of vitamins A, B complex, C, and D, as well as minerals such as iron, potassium, and zinc. Its leaves are often used to add flavor to salads, sandwiches, and teas. The roots can be found in some coffee substitutes, and the flowers are used to make certain wines.

In traditional medicine, dandelion roots and leaves were used to treat liver problems. Native Americans also used dandelion concoctions (liquid made by boiling down the herb in water) to treat kidney disease, swelling, skin problems, heartburn, and stomach upset. Chinese medicinal practitioners traditionally used dandelion to treat digestive disorders, appendicitis, and breast problems (such as inflammation or lack of milk flow). In Europe, herbalists incorporated it into remedies for fever, boils, eye problems, diabetes, and diarrhea.

Today, dandelion roots are mainly used as an appetite stimulant, digestive aid, and for liver and gallbladder function. Dandelion leaves are used as a diuretic to stimulate the excretion of urine.  As well as its diuretic effect, the roots act as an antiviral agent, appetite stimulant, digestive aid, and may help promote gastrointestinal health. Dandelion flower has antioxidant properties. Dandelion may also help improve the immune system.

Dandelion Flowers are sensitive to light, they open with the sun in the morning and close in the evening or during gloomy weather.

As previously posted, I have recently taken a liking to dandelion print fabrics...and now that I see that the dandelion deserves more respect than we all give her due...I like Dandelion even more!  Do you?

Summer...it's finally here!

I am TOTALLY enjoying not bustling the boys off to school every day.  Oh the lounging! No more nagging to get showered, make beds, eat, gather backpacks...bliss!  And our hot weather has FINALLY arrived after literally MONTHS of waiting...

Speaking of school, I was digging through some old boxes the other day and came across a box of treasures. This book was gifted to me from my mother...from her mother, from her mother. Therefore, in case you are keeping track, from my Great Grandmother, who was a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Saskatchewan.

The book has a publish date of 1936. It's so ratty & darling! A total treasure!

Friday Pretties!

Remind yourself often...

Happy Friday Pretties!
Have an AMAZING weekend!

a break in the clouds...

The fog in my head is starting to lift...finally. Headache still lingers at what, day 6? day 7? I'm losing count...

Here are my newest treasures (pls pardon the abysmal, shadowy iPhone pics...can't find my camera...camera? where are you?)

The vase I picked up at a local thrift store, there are quite a few similar in my Depression Glass "manual" but I am having some trouble identifying it's markings, and the dish on the right is the one I told you about...it's so lovely! (hugs again to Chelsea!) yet to be id' in the manual...

Bit of news for you: I am now officially registered @ Douglas for Doula Certification! Pre-natal & post-natal. Woot!

the 0400 rant...

OOOOOH I HATE the middle of the night...I'm awake, my patients are not. My thoughts turn pensive & philosophical. I get all these brilliant ideas to/of & for change (why isn't there a triangle key on this keyboard?)

I still have my blooming headache, not for lack of trying...a co-worker & fellow haver of headaches, gave me a magical mint meltaway headache wafer if you will! Not so magical for me...perhaps I need one of these.

(cute yes?)

My calendar is illegible...my July has turned into some raving lunacy of busy-ness (don't judge my literary genius, it's 4am) And one of my favourite daytimers was ruined by a water bottle whose lid wasn't screwed on just right...do you have any idea how hard it is to find a cute daytimer in July???

{PS. tonite @ work, i was gifted a wonderful new piece of depression glass! an avocado green bon-bon dish...which seems to match my egg plate! yessssss! pics to come...hugs to Chelsea for the lovely gift, for whittling down the unsuspecting estate sale host to a cool two - fiddy...(you people have NO clue what you are selling do you?????) i may have shrieked, just sayin.}
