~ Dandelion ~

While many people think of the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) as a pesky weed, herbalists consider it a valuable herb with many culinary and medicinal uses. Dandelion is a rich source of vitamins A, B complex, C, and D, as well as minerals such as iron, potassium, and zinc. Its leaves are often used to add flavor to salads, sandwiches, and teas. The roots can be found in some coffee substitutes, and the flowers are used to make certain wines.

In traditional medicine, dandelion roots and leaves were used to treat liver problems. Native Americans also used dandelion concoctions (liquid made by boiling down the herb in water) to treat kidney disease, swelling, skin problems, heartburn, and stomach upset. Chinese medicinal practitioners traditionally used dandelion to treat digestive disorders, appendicitis, and breast problems (such as inflammation or lack of milk flow). In Europe, herbalists incorporated it into remedies for fever, boils, eye problems, diabetes, and diarrhea.

Today, dandelion roots are mainly used as an appetite stimulant, digestive aid, and for liver and gallbladder function. Dandelion leaves are used as a diuretic to stimulate the excretion of urine.  As well as its diuretic effect, the roots act as an antiviral agent, appetite stimulant, digestive aid, and may help promote gastrointestinal health. Dandelion flower has antioxidant properties. Dandelion may also help improve the immune system.

Dandelion Flowers are sensitive to light, they open with the sun in the morning and close in the evening or during gloomy weather.

As previously posted, I have recently taken a liking to dandelion print fabrics...and now that I see that the dandelion deserves more respect than we all give her due...I like Dandelion even more!  Do you?

Happy Victoria Day

Rocketboy & I hit the Farmer's Market in little downtown Abby yesterday before heading out to the in laws place. I believe in trying to buy local if you can help it, sometimes you can't but hey, try & support the little person eh? Usually what you get is better service, better product, better quality and a real sense of community not to mention satisfaction.

So, we thought we would troll the lane for goodies for Rocket-ma-n-pa-in-law, 34th wedding anniversary you know. We ended up with a handcrafted planter, we filled it with local goodies, bbq & hot sauce made from Abbotsford peppers, cranberry honey made from some busy Abbotsford bees, some local wine , some artisan breads and the most gorgeous flowers I have ever seen. We think they loved it.

Short ferry jaunt and we are in lovely Gibsons!

My in-laws have the BEST view EVER!  Truth.

There is one thing we do well in Gibsons....EAT! My FIL is the best chef, and the seafood is never ending...good laughs,(I ADORE my inlaws) too much wine, my wonderful boys doting on their adorable cousin...

Today, I lay low. My FIL squeezed me goodbye too hard, and looking for rare sea glass with my babes @ the beach took more out of me than I expected it would. I know...whine whine whine sore back whine.  Not ready for work on Tuesday...maybe it could stay Monday for a while longer????

Determination & Delights

My main goal today was to take it easy. Nothing to aggravate my back. I want to be able to go back to work on Monday. Heck, I want to be able to do anything! Pain free. The Toradol is really helping...

Rocketboy had some side jobs to do today & the boys surprised me with a request for...waaaaaaait for it....HAIRCUTS! Now those of you who know my Mason, know that his hair is really a masterpiece to behold. It's like a train wreck that you cannot look away from. But this 9 year old is FIERCELY proud of it. Anyhooo...Quinn stuck to his usual faux-hawk, Mason got a trim. He truly did. I swear. And I am ok with it...hippie.

After haircut heaven, I dropped the boys off with their papa and decided to hit any yard sale I saw along the way home, and there were many today!  Here are my fun little vintage finds: at 50 cents a piece, (LOVE little cutie pie old ladies!) I'm quite pleased with them!

This is lovely, (sorry the pics are so wee, you can click it to big it!) a beautifully cut glass plate sits atop a silver stand which could use some silver polish...it's the PERFECT piece for Rosie's candle!

This lovely little vase is the start of my green glassware collection. Don't ask me why, I am just so drawn to green glass! Holds little azalea cuttings juuuuuust right!

After yard sale patrolling, I decided to hit Hemingway's Used Books in downtown Abbotsford...looking for non other than Jane Eyre. I love this bookstore. I love how it smells all vintage-ee when you walk in. And I love how when you ask the man who runs the joint if he has a certain book, he knows JUST where it is in his store...So I got me a nice gently used copy of Jane Eyre & I will report book-club-style back to you once I get started.

My dear Ms. C. has had a longing for a certain special cookbook, and I happened to get my hands on that today too. I was so excited to find this for her (only copy in the store), that I rushed it STRAIGHT over to her house! She may have squealed. Just sayin. I'm pretty sure I already know exactly where she is going to put it!

Once Rocketboy came home, we ran the doggies, grabbed some java, did some leisurely shopping, looked at travel trailers....mmmhmmmm. Then we came home to our patio for homemade margaritas, some french bread with balsamic vinegar & evoo, and a lovely bocconcini salad with oregano from our garden!

A perfect, relaxing, pretty close to pain free day!
